The 12 Best Things to Do in Poway

8 min read · Updated August 29, 2026

Poway sits in the hills of inland San Diego County, and most drivers on the 15 never see past the business park along the freeway. That's a mistake — the city has a reservoir ringed by trails, a genuinely old-fashioned downtown park with a working train, one of the county's best-known hikes, and a horse-and-hiking trail network that stretches for miles. Here's what's actually worth your time.

1. Hike Mt. Woodson to Potato Chip Rock

The trail that put Poway on Instagram. A steady, sun-exposed climb from Lake Poway up to a thin sandstone slab that juts out over the valley — the line for a photo on it can rival the hike itself on weekends. Start at sunrise, carry more water than feels necessary, and go on a weekday if you can.

2. Spend a morning at Lake Poway

A reservoir and recreation area with a paved loop trail, boat and kayak rentals, and a stocked trout season that draws anglers from across the county. It's also the main trailhead for Mt. Woodson and Iron Mountain, so plan to arrive early if you want the close parking.

3. Old Poway Park and the Saturday Farmers Market

A small slice of turn-of-the-century Poway rebuilt around a working steam railroad. The Poway–Midland Railroad runs vintage train rides on weekends, the Heritage Museum sits right on the grounds, and the Saturday farmers market fills the park with produce stands and live music.

4. Hike Blue Sky Ecological Reserve

A shaded canyon reserve along Green Valley Creek with an easy, family-friendly trail network and genuine oak riparian habitat — a cooler, gentler counterpoint to the exposed climbs elsewhere in the city.

5. Climb Iron Mountain

A steep out-and-back to a 360-degree summit view of inland North County. Less famous than Mt. Woodson, less crowded, and arguably a better workout.

6. Goodan Ranch / Sycamore Canyon Preserve

A wide-open ranch-and-canyon preserve with rolling grassland, oak woodland and a network of multi-use trails shared by hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians. Quiet even on weekend mornings.

7. Catch a show at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts

A full-scale civic theater that hosts touring productions, concerts and the local community theater season — a surprising amount of programming for a city this size.

8. Play a round at Maderas Golf Club

A well-regarded public course laid into the hills east of town, with the kind of elevation change and scenery that make it worth the green fee even if your handicap doesn't deserve it.

9. Ride the horse and hiking trail network

Poway's official nickname is 'The City in the Country,' and it earns it with an extensive network of shared horse and hiking trails threading through neighborhoods and open space. Horse properties are common enough that you'll share the road with riders on a normal afternoon.

10. Poway Rodeo and Poway Days Parade

Fall brings the Poway Rodeo, a genuine PRCA event with roots going back decades, and September brings the Poway Days Parade — the city's biggest community celebration, with a parade down Poway Road and a full weekend of festivities.

11. Concerts and movies in the park

Summer evenings bring free concerts and movie nights to Old Poway Park and Community Park — bring a blanket, grab something from a food truck, and stay for the sunset behind the hills.

12. Day-trip to the coast at Del Mar and Torrey Pines

Poway is inland, but the coast is closer than people expect — about 25 to 30 minutes to Del Mar's beaches and racetrack or the sandstone bluffs of Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. Pair a morning hike at Lake Poway with an afternoon at the beach and you've covered both sides of San Diego County in one day.

The short version

Do the trails early while it's cool, Old Poway Park in the late morning, and save the coast for an afternoon drive when you want a change of scenery.
