Poway with Kids: A Realistic Guide

6 min read · Updated August 29, 2026

Poway is an easy city to visit with kids: short drives, a lot of open space, and several attractions genuinely scaled for young children. Heat and trail exposure are the main things to plan around. Here's how to build a day that doesn't end in a meltdown.

The reliable morning: Old Poway Park

A vintage steam train ride, a heritage museum, open lawn and, on Saturdays, a lively farmers market. It's shaded in places, low-key, and easy for a preschooler to enjoy for a full morning.

Lake Poway for a lazy afternoon

The paved loop trail around Lake Poway is stroller-friendly in sections, boat rentals are a hit with slightly older kids, and there's a playground and picnic area near the parking lot for when everyone's had enough sun.

Easy trails for younger legs

Blue Sky Ecological Reserve has shaded, gentle trails along a creek that are far more forgiving for young kids than the exposed climbs up Mt. Woodson or Iron Mountain. Save those for older kids and adults.

Community Park and the summer movie series

Community Park's playgrounds and open lawn are a solid everyday stop, and the free summer concerts and movie nights there are genuinely built for families — bring a blanket and low chairs.

What to skip

Don't attempt Mt. Woodson or Iron Mountain with young kids in the middle of a summer day — there's no shade and it gets dangerous fast, not just unpleasant. Save the coast trip to Del Mar or Torrey Pines for a day when everyone can handle the extra hour in the car.

The short version

Train and market in the morning, lake or easy trail in the afternoon, home before the heat peaks.
